Household
Learn the house rules nobody tells you
Overview
Quiet times, laundry, recycling, Sundays.
The question you never knew to ask“Why is my neighbour complaining about my shower?”
Why it matters
Buildings and communes have their own rules for quiet times, the shared laundry and rubbish. Knowing them early keeps neighbours friendly.
Does this apply to me?
Your circumstances: Canton Bern, B permit, mixed nationalities, family with children, moving with a partner, arriving soon
It applies to every household moving to Switzerland.
When?
In your first week.
What do I need?
Nothing to prepare beyond your own notes.
What do I do next?
- Ask your landlord for the house rules (Hausordnung) and the laundry rota.
- Find your commune's waste and recycling calendar and which bags to use.
- Check what is expected on Sundays and public holidays.
- Ask before installing your own washing machine or dryer.
